Putting the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals to the Test
What does it look like when the next generation of healthcare professionals gets the opportunity to put their skills into practice?
At the South West Skills Challenge, young people from colleges across southwest England came together for a full day of competition designed to recognize their healthcare knowledge, skills, and achievements.
Hosted by New College Swindon, the challenge brought together participants from Bath College, Wiltshire College and University Centre, Exeter College, Weston College, and New College Swindon.
The competition combined a knowledge test, two healthcare simulations, and an academic presentation—giving participants multiple ways to demonstrate what they had learned.
A Day Built Around Healthcare
The healthcare simulations utilized an Ares patient simulator and a simulated participant, adding a hands-on element to the day’s activities.
Alongside the knowledge test and academic presentation, the simulations gave participants another way to demonstrate their skills as they competed against peers from colleges across the region.
The standard of care, skill, and work demonstrated throughout the challenge was outstanding.
Recognizing the Next Generation
Among the participants was Gracie from Bridgewater & Taunton College, who received first prize for her exceptional performance.
Gracie hopes to continue her career in healthcare, making the recognition a meaningful moment as she looks toward her future in the profession.
Her achievement was one of many celebrated throughout the challenge, which brought together young people pursuing healthcare education from across southwest England.
Creating Opportunities to Practice
The South West Skills Challenge offered something different from a traditional academic competition.
By bringing together knowledge testing, healthcare simulations, and an academic presentation, the event gave participants the opportunity to demonstrate different skills in one setting.
