More Than a Field Trip: Bringing Healthcare Careers to Life
For students exploring a future in healthcare, learning about a career is one thing. Experiencing it firsthand is another.
Through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, students from Sarasota High School’s Health Science program had the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and into the world of healthcare simulation.
Their experience at Elevate Healthcare went far beyond a facility tour.
Seeing Healthcare From a Different Perspective
Students rotated through interactive stations focused on 3D printing, material flow, automation, and wound simulation. They also took part in a live Lucina birthing simulation, giving them the opportunity to see healthcare simulation in action.
For students already studying health science, the experience offered a different way to connect what they learn in school with the work happening inside a healthcare technology company.
They weren’t just seeing the finished products. They were seeing some of the people, processes, and skills that go into creating them.
Careers Can Take More Than One Path
One of the day’s most important messages came from the Elevate Healthcare team members who shared their own career journeys.
Career paths came to life as employees showed students how an entry-level role can grow into opportunities in quality, leadership, technical documentation, and other areas.
The message was simple: where you start does not have to define where you finish.
That perspective can be valuable for students who are still considering what a future in healthcare might look like. Healthcare is a broad field, and the path into it isn’t always a straight line.
During lunch and mentoring time hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, students also received practical guidance on interviews, professional introductions, and resumes.
Making Career Exploration Hands-On
Career exploration often begins with a conversation, a classroom lesson, or a presentation.
But experiences like this can make those possibilities feel more tangible.
By interacting with simulation technology, exploring how products are made, hearing directly from professionals, and asking questions about career paths, students had the opportunity to see a healthcare industry they may not have encountered before.
