Manikin Buying Guide: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Pick a Vendor
Buying a simulation manikin is not like buying most capital equipment.
The decision affects your curriculum, faculty workflows, accreditation reporting, learner experiences, and ultimately the readiness of the clinicians your program helps prepare.
A checklist of features won’t get you there. What will get you there is asking the right questions before you ever sit down with a vendor.

The most advanced simulator on the market is only as valuable as your faculty’s ability to use it.
If the instructor interface requires extensive technical training to operate, adoption often suffers. Less experienced faculty may avoid using the equipment, scenario quality may vary widely, and the simulator’s capabilities may never be fully utilized.
During demonstrations or pilot sessions, ask an educator who has not been trained on the software to perform basic scenario management tasks.

5. What Does the System Do With Performance Data?
Simulation generates valuable data, and how that data is captured, organized, and applied should be a key part of your evaluation process.
Ask:
- Does the platform capture clinical events, learner actions, and timing during a scenario?
- Does it make that data available in a structured format that supports debriefing?
- Can it generate reports for accreditation, competency assessment, or program improvement?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, or requires significant manual effort, you may be leaving substantial educational value untapped.

6. What Is the Real Cost of Ownership?
The purchase price is only the beginning of the financial conversation.
Before signing anything, understand the ongoing cost of ownership associated with the system.

- Are replacement parts stocked domestically or shipped internationally?
- Is there a loaner program available during major repairs?
- Who is the primary support contact, and what are their hours?
8. How Does This System Integrate With Your Existing Infrastructure?
A simulation manikin rarely operates in isolation.
Most programs already use some combination of:
- Simulation management software
- Learning management systems
- Audiovisual recording solutions
- Accreditation reporting processes
New equipment should integrate with those systems rather than create additional complexity.

Ask vendors for a specific answer to how their system integrates with the platforms you already use. Request references from programs with similar infrastructure setups.
Integration challenges discovered after purchase can be costly and disruptive.
9. Can You Run a Pilot With Your Own Scenarios Before You Commit?
Any vendor worth serious consideration should support a meaningful pilot process.

A realistic pilot helps uncover issues that demonstrations often hide:
