SSH Virtual Learning Lab | Standardized Patients & OSCEs: What’s Working, What’s Hard

May 6, 2026 2:00 PM - May 6, 2026 3:00 PM

Sharing real-world wins, challenges, and ideas you can try in your own program

Standardized patients and OSCEs can create powerful learning—but they can also be messy, time-consuming, and hard to assess consistently. In this learning lab, we’ll take an honest look at what’s working well and what’s still hard when it comes to SP-driven OSCEs. We’ll walk through how these challenges are addressed, including emerging solutions and technologies, that can help improve SP-driven OSCE delivery. You’ll leave with practical ideas, small tweaks, and a few “wish we’d known this sooner” lessons you can bring back to your own program next term.

What you’ll learn:

  • Identify strengths and pain points in current standardized patient OSCE practice.
  • Map out key steps in an SP-centered OSCE workflow, from case design and SP preparation through assessment and debrief.
  • Identify two to three specific changes they could test in their own SP/OSCE setup to improve experience for learners, SPs, and faculty.
